Family Digital Agreement, Ages 10–13 — The Transition
Ten to thirteen is the transition — from YouTube Kids to the whole internet, from playing near other people to talking with strangers, from "our tablet" to "my phone." It's the age where the pressure starts ("everyone else has Snapchat"), where the group chat becomes a second social world, and where most families improvise a rulebook in the middle of an argument. - Phones charge outside the bedroom overnight, full stop, through age 13. It's the single rule we're least willing to soften, and these are the years it protects most.
- AI companion apps — the ones built to feel like a friend or a partner you text with — are a hard no under 14. Our most contested stance, and we don't blink on it.
- You make commitments too. This isn't a list of things your kid owes you; your own phone habits are on the page.
The page we'd save first in a fire is the Amnesty Clause: "Once per quarter, your kid can tell you about a mistake — and there is no phone consequence for the telling. No questions about how we found out. We help fix what can be fixed. We move on." These are the years your kid will see something they can't unsee, or send something they regret. Whether they tell you depends entirely on whether telling you is safe. This page makes it safe.
